New Media

The 2006 FIFA World Cup™ was more widely available on “new media” than ever before. Originating the signal on HDTV means that new media coverage reached new standards.  Fans received near-live coverage of the most dramatic and decisive moments of all the 64 matches on their mobile telephony devices or their home computer. Thanks to the development of new media coverage, they never missed another goal.

Record New Media Coverage

More than 100 territories were covered by a New Media license. It was a big step forward, made possible at a level and quality never seen before because the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ used HDTV as the source, allowing big improvements in the focus, quality and relevance of the pictures that the end-user received. The experience can be made significantly better and easier to follow on a small screen than current coverage of national football leagues on mobile phones.

The special requirements of New Media Licensees are being catered for through a tailor-made New Media Content Package. The clean feed is delivered directly to the New Media Unit at the IBC, where experienced editors and producers create a package designed for exploitation without the need for extensive editing. Based on the standard license of four minutes of raw material, material was used creatively – near-live clips, match summaries and competition summaries, graphics and different language voice-overs - which provided a rich menu of options.

Those vital ‘Near Live’ video clips arrived with the viewer in minutes. The editor selects the shot and uses “Pan and Scan” technology, developed to reduce feature films to the smaller format of the television screen, to zoom in and capture the core action or goal, producing a picture that is much more exciting for tiny handsets.
