Milan, Italy, 5 May 2010 – This evening, the final match of the Coppa Italia will be covered and broadcast live in stereoscopic 3D; the first football event ever produced in 3D for the Italian market. The 3D coverage of the match is being co-ordinated by Lega Calcio in partnership with Italian state broadcaster RAI and Infront Sports & Media. The international sports marketing group is significantly involved in the development of 3D as a new medium for football and other major sports.

The match, which takes place in the Olympic Stadium in Rome (kick off 8.45 pm CET) between F.C. Internazionale Milano (Inter) and AS Roma will be one of the first major football matches in European history to be broadcast live in 3D. The technology was only pioneered in football last year in April, when the French Ligue 1 match between Olympique Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain was broadcast live in 3D television from Lyon’s Stade Gerland. Host Broadcast Services (HBS), an Infront subsidiary, was the initiator of this major development.

For the Coppa Italia, Infront Production, in partnership with RAI, is producing the event in 3D high definition (HD) quality using a live stereoscopic shooting system of eight 3D cameras in total and a dedicated 3D outside broadcast (OB) truck for the production. All systems in use are compatible with the standards that have been established for the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa, where 25 matches will be covered in 3D. This constitutes be a huge step forward for the stereoscopic technology that is the current sensation in the film and television industries.

In Italy, the 3D matches will be offered publicly and live in eight cinemas belonging to the Space Cinema chain. These are located in the wider Milan area – Cerro Maggiore, Milan (Odeon), Montebello della Battaglia, Parma (Barilla Center), Rozzano and Vimercate - and in Rome (Moderno and Parco de Medici). Eutalsat will be responsible for the satellite transmission.
