Handball hits new heights

Cumulative audience exceeds 1.2 billion in 2006

The latest men’s tournament took place in January/February 2006 in Switzerland, with France emerging as the new champion. More than 200 television and radio representatives attended the 47 matches. Broadcast coverage was available in over 80 countries across four continents. The event was the most extensively covered and viewed tournament in the history of Men’s European Handball Championships: approx. 780 programme hours were watched by 765 million viewers.

The 2006 women’s championship took place in Sweden from December. The event reached 552 hours of broadcast and a cumulative audience of 461 million, a new record for the women’s event.

The combined cumulative television audiences for both 2006 European competitions exceeded the benchmark level set in 2004. The two tournaments reached a cumulative audience of more than 1.2 billion viewers, with over 1,300 hours of programming. Infront has increased television coverage significantly over the many years of its involvement with the EHF European Championships.

The event was enhanced by an excellent official tournament website, www.euro06.com, which was jointly provided by the EHF, the Swiss Handball Federation and Infront. This provided fans with extensive information about the event, participating nations and players. It received 74.6 million page impressions – a result that more than tripled those compared to the 2004 event website.

A complete online documentation of the men's event, including pictures, videos, key data and statistics, is available as a dedicated online presentation.
