Beijing, China – Continuing its long history of supporting athletic excellence, UPS (NYSE: UPS) has renewed its official partnership with the best in Chinese hoops, the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) League and China Men’s National Basketball Team, for four additional years starting at the end of 2009.
With all the CBA league teams and the Men’s National Team uniforms prominently featuring the UPS logo, the shipping giant is confident the sponsorship will play an important role in its brand building efforts in China.
Additionally, to utilize the agreement to draw national and international attention to the CBA’s top talent, UPS will resume its annual “UPS Best Point Guard of the CBA League” award by asking fans to select the top point guard of the regular-season.
“The CBA League has almost 600 million cumulative TV viewers, making it the most watched sports league in China. We hope that our sponsorship can add to this appeal,” said Chris Grubb, Vice President of UPS Asia Pacific Region. “Our supply chain solutions and the depth of our global network put us in the strong position of being able to extend our commitment to sports in China. With our legacy of support for sports in China, UPS looks forward to helping the CBA fulfill their vast potential and to encouraging more of China’s younger generation to play the game through additional grassroots efforts.”
Under this partnership, UPS will continue its duties as Official Supplier of Logistics and Express Delivery Services and will work with the CBA to conduct in-stadium activities at games to create more excitement for fans. As a key partner of the CBA’s international events in China, UPS will have the unique role of directly helping to deliver China’s distinct brand of basketball to the rest of the world while making efforts to nurture the athletic spirit of Chinese youth.
“We are glad to extend our partnership with a global brand name such as UPS, as UPS has demonstrated both its commitment to sports and its passionate support of basketball in China over the past two years. In addition to supporting the CBA and Team China, this agreement confirms the mutual efforts of both the CBA and UPS to foster the development of the sport in China.” said CBA official.
Over the next four years, UPS will host promotional programs, such as inviting CBA players and coaches to participate in activities organized by UPS, with the aim of promoting the game and growing the Chinese basketball community. Additionally, at the annual CBA All-Star Game, a select group of top CBA players will compete in the “CBA All-Star Game Skills Competition by UPS”, testing their skills in a series of on-court activities.
Ma Guoli, CEO & Managing Director of Infront China, CBA’s marketing partner, added, “This partnership provides mutual benefits for the CBA and UPS by lending the CBA and the athletic youth of China the global reach of UPS in growing interest for the game, as well as allowing UPS the opportunity to solidify its brand presence in the Chinese market around sports.”
In recent years, UPS has made spreading enthusiasm for the sport of basketball in China a mission. Culminating in the company being chosen in 2005 as the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Sponsor of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, their support for the game has garnered global recognition.
UPS is the world’s largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain services, offering an extensive range of options for synchronizing the movement of goods, information and funds. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., UPS serves more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

After the introduction of some reforms in 1995, the first CBA league was launched the following year. In 2005, the launch of the first CBA professional league, with currently 18 clubs participating, represented a giant step in the development of professional basketball in China.
